  • there's gold in them there sewers

i was at a job site today and had some time to blow when i finished. a city of la jetter truck operator was waiting for a delivery of caustic chemical to be delivered next to where i was parked.

sparked up a conversation with him about jetting and vacuuming with his vactor combo truck. asked him how much he vacs out. he told me he doesn't use it much, but instead he uses a clam bucket and screed to catch his finds.

he showed me a gold bracelet he's wearing that was a find. according to what he told me, he's cashed in $8,000 this year and has a good $5,000 waiting to be sold.

i guess there's some benefits to being a sanitation worker.

the caustic delivery he was waiting for is by an outside company that delivers 3,000 gallons of chemical that reacts with water and burns out all the grime from the system. it's dumped into 3 different manholes in the city once weekly. each 3000 gallons makes it to the treatment plant next to lax hours later.

apparently it burns out everything from roots to grease.

3,000 gallons every week into 3 different manholes.

the operator/ driver wears a splash suit, face shield and tight fittings goggles along with gloves.

I think of what's in the sewers as black gold, but never actually found gold.
      What a lucky guy.

tool, the chemical and sewage still end up at the sewage treatment plant right next to lax. probably by the time it travels the 10+ miles it probably is pretty neutralized and washes out the pipes. think of it as a giant colonic

Finders Keepers, JC. As long as nobody asks, I guess.
With the way the guy just opened up to Rick (a stranger), I wonder how long it'll be before he brags about it to the wrong people at the office, too.

sort of like a 2 sided mechanical shovel that picks up the muck and leaves the water behind.

                            new jersey.

the contractor that does root control for the city is out of new york/ dukes root control.

i guess the city is subbing out more and more stuff from in house to private.
