I have been using a Ridgid K-6 straight auger. Never had any issues with my Ridgid auger. The only thing I do to it is used a chisel to cut the first two winds off the front of the auger to make more of an open hook.
I have seen to many guys blow out the tops of the traps with a drop head auger. The metal ring around the drop head knuckle has tendency to hit the top of a trap when they are working a blockage right at the top of the trap, and that ring with the torque they built up just blasts a hole through.
