  • running power to pool pump??

I'm in the process of running power to my pool pump. I've got all the supplies and am ready to dig but a friend(builder) of mine says it might be a good idea to sink a grounding rod and connect the GFI to it w/ #6 copper wire.
My ? is: is the grounding rod necessary or an added expence?
    Reply appreciated.

I'd say an added expense. Your already running a ground wire to the GFCI. That Should be sufficient.

If anything, you might ground the actual pump body. That way you're sure it really is grounded.

NEC 680 requires extensive bonding requirements, I would strongly suggest you consult with a qualified electrician or the local electrical inspector before going much farther.

jsut a few pictures and information for you to consider

this info is 1999, but if any thing it is more stringent now,

FWIW, my pool pump IS grounded to a rod in the ground just behind the pump room/building. also there are GFIs on virtually everything out there.

my pump/filter setup is under cover (concrete house). T/G roof, vented back (non weather side), and bifold plywood doors. not totally watertight, especially in a storm (we don't use the "h" word here ), but functional.

It is code around here. Just extra safety stuff. See if your neighbors have it or call local code office for info. Better to be up to code if you ever want to sell in the future. Seems like everything gets inspected by home inspectors now days.
