  • 4 black/4 white wire from ceiling

My sister took down a ceiling light. She called me after and here is what I found.

4 black and 4 white wires. One black wire has a white on the end of the insulation.

I connected all black and all white to ceiling fan. The fuse blows.

Where am I going wrong? Thanks.

Sounds like an older house where many wires come together in a light fixture box on the ceiling. To have 4 whites and 4 blacks, you have 4 separate (2 wire cables) coming into the box. One of the Black/white wires is a switch leg going to the electrical box where the switch was for the light. You have to identify which 2 wire cable goes to the light switch. Once you figure out which wire is going to the switch you will then take the remaining 3 blacks and the white wire going to the switch and connect them all together with a wire nut. Now the power is going down to the switch on the white wire and returning on the black. Take all the white wires remaining and connect all 3 of them together and also connect the white wire from the fan to those whites and wire nut those 4 white wires. Now you have a black wire left coming from the switch, now connect that black wire to the black wire of the fan and wire nut those 2. Now your fan will operate from the old light switch. Try that and report back. Good luck Lou

WOW. thanks Lou, almost there. Everything works by a switch now(bathroom, kitchen plug, closet) except the bedroom switch. Light works, fan doesn't.

Maybe I will start a business of construction support and just post questions here and make money. You guys could be my middle man.

Rick, after reading a lot of your replies, you could have a few bucks by now.

I attempted this same setup and the switch does control the fan/light kit combo BUT when I turn it off the outlets come on (they're off when the switch is in the on position). Any ideas?

Re: 4 black/4 white wire from ceiling

the simple is you have some thing connected wrong, (I guessing you knew that),
most likely your power to the receptacles is being diverted to the light, or your indirectly switching the neutral some how, I can not tell you exactly what is wrong, as I have no idea how you wired it up and what the wires go to, but
I would find the hot wire or wires, in the box, Identify them,
fine the switch leg, Identify it,
and then try to figure out what the other wires go to and do and identify them, and reconnect accordingly,

and if you do not have the skill, tools, or understanding to trace out the wires and Identify them, and reconnect them properly, then Hire some qualified, one who can do it properly and safely,
