  • electrical tool kit question

    Hi,

I bought a Greenlee Basic Electric Kit yesterday. It contains a GT-11 non-contact Voltage Detector (CAT IV), GT-10 Polarity Cube and DM-20 MINI Digital Multimeter.

The Digital Multimeter is for CAT I and CAT II applications. My question is that do all applications inside my house belong to CAT II or CAT I? I am wondering if I can use the multimeter in all my devices and also the Main Electrical Panel?

    thanks,

    James

Flule has a great explanation of the categories assigned to meters and other test equipment. You can find it at http://www.fluke.com/download/library/1263690_w.pdf.

Thank you for your link. I read that article. It looks like the main panel belongs to CAT III from that article. Am I right? But I don't know if the main panel inside a residential property is different from a commerical property or not?

Anything and everything at your home is Cat1 or Cat2. Cat 3-4 are for 3 phase industrial or commercial applications.
