Is this requirement negated by an existing system of black iron with an existing ground?
What have guys seen from various inspectors on this?

Good luck. This issue had been brought to the NEC Board in Boston. What they would like to see done is the manufacturer install a grounding lug on each fitting, so a bonding jumper can be installed from the pipe to the stove fitting.
