  • Using 12-2 as 12-3

    Scenario here;

    You have a large open room with 10 can lights. You want the ability to switch half (5 cans) on/off so you don't light up half of the room your not using.

    I was told you can use 12-2 wire as 12-3 as long as there is one run of 12-3?

    Example:

    Run 12-2 from your panel to your first box. Run 1 run of 12-2, and 1 run of 12-3 to the second box. From the 2nd box run two separate 12-2 lines, each run operating 5 cans. Is this possible to use as a 3way?

    How about just replacing the switch with a dimmer? They sell ones you can set to a certain intensity, and then it just goes to that level when it is switched on.

      All you need is one feed in to your sw box, and a 3 wire to your first can. then from that can the rest can be 2 wire. Adjust wire size accordingly by adding up your wattage on you lights.

        Where are the switches located (beside each other or opposite ends of room)
        What function do you want the switches to perform?
        (sw1 turns all lights on/off, sw2 selects 5 or 10)
