  • Will Handle-Locked Breakers Still Trip?

By handle-locked I mean the breaker handles are frozen in the ON position. While working in the barn I noticed some breakers that had been whitewashed over so many times it was hard to see there were breakers there. Just bumps on the panel...

In the event of a short circuit or overload, will the breakers still trip internally or is there a huge fire hazard waiting to happen?

Yes, they will internally trip, even if handle is held in the on position.

      What a relief!

Does this break the handle or is there some sort of linkage inside?

there is a mechanical trip mechanism inside the handle just lets you reset the breaker or turn it off and on

Not all breakers are "trip free", older breakers such as SQ D & Cutler-Hammer XO were not, but they have been obsolete for over 50 years.

If those breakers are so badly painted over I'd strongly suggest you consider replacing them
than hoping if a problem occurs the breaker will trip!

This is a dangerous situation waiting to happen!

I already suggested replacement of all breakers that are painted/limed over. I got the 'are you loco' look and then was told 'they've been that way for 50 years and they've been fine.'

So screw it, when the FILs barn burns to the ground I can say I told you so.

make him sign a waiver stating that you notified him. if an insurance adjuster starts after you in the event it does burn down you can show him the waiver.
