  • House burning

A house caught on fire down the street. Fire was erupting through the windows on the second floor and burned off the CL&P service from the pole. Every time the neutral and one of the conductors touched, it was like a gun shot going off. The triplex jumped off the ground about 2 feet and came back together on the ground. I can't imagine the amperage going through that but it never tripped the power company's breaker. They had to manually disconnect so the fire dept. could work the scene.

I hope no one was injured in the fire. The utility does not care about the triplex but protecting their transformer. They use much higher ampacities because the conductors are in open air. Scarey stuff, probably around 20000 amps.

I also hope the home owner had good insurance.
