  • wiring through recessed light box

I have installed recessed lighting with emt conduit. Can I run a hot wire through the recessed light box to another box for a smoke detector? In other words, an additional wire would be run from the switch box to abd through the recessed light to a separate box that would be for a smoke detector. I've got access issues, and am trying to keep it simple.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Re: wiring through recessed light box

If it is a separate circuit observing conduit and box fill calculations and does not share a neutral with another circuit you can use the can light j-box as long as it is accessible.

There must be a neutral ran along with the hot.

BTW, a smoke usually needs to be on an afci circuit.
