  • Need some advice

I have a 16' x20' shop I need to heat with natural gas. I have a wall heater that is not vented and I need a vented one because of the headaches I get from it.

Which brand, or model would you recommend based on reliability, and efficiency? I have figured out I need around 14,000 btu. Direct vent would be fine or I could go through the roof.

This is a model I am considering but I know nothing about empire.

I would consider looking here as they are made for garages.

I would go with a Modine.

The Hot Dawg was first on my list. The only problem is their smallest unit is 30,000 btu. Wouldn't a unit that big in my little shop cause it to short cycle?

Whatstate are you in? Have you done a heat loss? Heres a link to slant fin's free heat loss program if you dont have one.

              Re: Need some advice

I'm in Northern Indiana. I have not done a heat loss program on it. I went to download that program and it said one hour and thirty minutes left.

I have a wall mounted propane heater in there now that is 18,000 btu and it has done fine for the past winters.

No windows, completely insulated and vented. One 48" door. Before I replaced my furnace in my house it was way over sized and the on, off, on, off, drove me nuts.

One more vote for the Modine Hot Dawg, or Reznor UDAP series. The 30k input is roughly 24k output, so you are only 6k difference from your current LP model. The link you posted to the Empire was a 14k input. The output will be less.

Once the shop is up to temp, it might short cycle a little and overshoot the setpoint of the stat, but you also will have faster recovery when the doors are opened.

Yeah, I agree. When you consider the output I would rather be a little oversized. I dont think the cycling will be an issue unless your current unit is greatly oversized.

Actually, check Menards. They sell a Beacon Morris which looks exactly like Sterling, which I have installed. You should be able to pick up a 30k unit in the low $400's.

If Its the Beacon Morris Brute I would steer clear. I had to replace boards on 2 different units both within a year, and it was of a pain to deal with the warranty crap

Reznor makes a similar unit, a little less money.
