Aside from whatever codes that may apply, I've got wonder what would
prevent any hot air and lint from being blown back into the exhaust fan
and ultimately into the room? What kind of distance is involved? Will the
dryer be forcing air vertically? Will an additional blower be required?
HVAC isn't my forte, so I'm just wool-gathering, but the real question is how
difficult is it to drill a hole in the wall?

It's hard to run the duct through the utility room and drill the hole. It's not the drilling is hard, but the space to run the duct to the exterior wall.
I find it in IMC 2006 Section 504.1 that the Dryer vent need to be independent. The lint can be flammable so don't let you combine it with other system.
