  • Heating office space.

We purchased a home this year and I have a 100 sq ft home office. Before we moved into the home I have a new York 98% gas furnace with a matching 15 Seer HP installed. Our electric bill is quite high and I am wondering two things.

1.) Should I have the gas as primary heat during the winter?

2.) Would it be cheaper to heat the small office with a plug in space heater. They are usually either 1250 or 1500 watts.

I live in the Portland Oregon area so I would guess you would consider the winters mild with an occasional cold snap. My home is 2000' and built in 1992.

Gas cost's 1.13058 per Therm. Current month I used 81.7 therms for gas water, cooking and what ever little gas heat it may of been.

Electric is 6.778 per kWh for first 1000 then 7.500 there after. Current month I used 1497 kWh of electricity.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks Hawk. Is there a quick link to do this or just repost?

Seldom would an electric space heater cost less to use than central gas or HP, but your electric rates are pretty low
Around here, we would never see a heat pump on a gas furnace, and we don't use air handlers with electric heat much any more because of cost of electrons.

What I decided to do is to heat the house up to temp then close the office door. Once heated I turn the heat down. With the electronics and lights the office deeps pretty warm.
