    Re: window a/c question

assuming that both units are performing EXACTLY the same - one isnt less charged or has less cooling capacity for some reason -

    - room #1 is correctly matched or a little larger in size cooling unit
    - room #2 has a slightly higher BTU requirement than the window unit can produce

    THUS

Room 1 cools and shuts off, room 2 increases in heat and never shuts off, open door = both rooms cool and shut off (one helps the other)

edit: only a manual J or similar heat loss/gain calculation can tell you what each room needs for cooling capacity

Check for any airflow restrictions at either the evap or condensing coils. One or the other may be gummed up. One unit could be performing with no resitriction while the other has a blocked coil or air filter.

The only difference between night and day is radiant heat load. It is higher at night as the attic has reached temperature. During the day, it is getting to temperature. Adding reflective foil insulation in the attic would help. Foil side up (bounces radiant back towards roof line). We have this problem frequently in 2-story houses in the northeast usa. People add insulation layers only, with no reflective, and radiant passes through insulation easily.
