  • Circulating pump on feed or return in residential gas boiler

consider a conventional hot water, natural gas, cast iron boiler, single zone.

When I was coming up, the old school guys always preached "pump into the boiler".

Nowadays, the boiler manufacturers all show the pump on the feed or "pump away." Even B&G preaches this in their Little Red Schoolhouse classes.

So my question is this: what is the significant advantage to "pumping away"? Safety? Better pull through the system? more efficient?
    thanks,

They will work fine either way if you pipe it to suit your pump location.

Hit a button. Anyhow, you are trying to keep the pressure higher in the piping system. The system works better. Not to big of a deal with your scenario. There is o friction loss to speak of in a cast iron boiler. That's why it would be just fine either way unless you keep the pressure too low.

Something else that people talk about but I have yet to experience is air being sucked in from air vents. It happens pretty easy if you don't replace and repipe with a bladder style expansion tank.

Swade, I was taught the same way as you.

        Either way will work though.
