  • Will a Universal thermocouple work in mother's 1979 furnace?

Thought I'd buy one at Home Depot or Lowe's just to keep on hand.
I do not remember the make of her horizontal furnace in her crawl space.

Should I replace her 34 year old furnace this summer?

    Thank you.
I'd take an educated guess - but I'm unqualified.
It ain't just soot, it's paydirt.

If the unit doesnt use any kind of proprietary valve then it should work fine. You should only replace the unit if:

    - it fails professional inspection (heat exchanger failure is a biggie on horizontal units)

    OR if it passes inspection

    - if the owner doesnt like some quality of the furnace - cost of operation, noise, efficiency, lack of options

I was at a trade show last week and another tech in front of me was complaining to the vendor that they have had a couple occasions where the universal did not work. The vendor stated they have had problems with them and the coy is in the process of modifying the design. I always try to get the Mfg's recommended replacement. Good luck.
