  • MegaPress VS lightning

Need some education. CSST had the big lightning debate some time ago and is still ongoing. Megapress looks like a strong comprise but I do have a question. What will happen to that "rubber" synthetic ring when lightning hits it?

I am against these types of gimmicks but you can't plan for everything. Since you asked I think it will split the ring. My biggest issue is how do you properly bond it to earth when there is a rubber gasket at every joint?

the same way that copper propress is grounded.

the copper fitting is crimped to the copper tubing.

since i've only seen the megapress1 time at the trade show, i'm pretty sure that the steel fitting is in direct or indirect contact with the pipe. i can't remember if the fitting has the gripper teeth like the 2.5-4'' xl / xlc or if the fitting is fully crimped like the 1/2''-2'' propress is.

the west coast is last in line for distribution.

According to Viega’s MegaPress installationmanual, section 3.6.2 refers to electrical bonding as follows:

          3.6.2 Electrical Bonding

          When properly installed,Viega MegaPress and

          MegaPressG fittings complywith section 1211.15,

Electrical Bonding andGrounding, of the Uniform

Plumbing Code and section 310of the International

          Fuel Gas Code.

          The mechanical press providescontinuous

metal to metal contactbetween fitting and pipe.

The press ensures thecontinuity of the bonding

          through this contact.

              Re: MegaPress VS lightning

i would assume so. the only difference between the propress for water and the propress for gas/ propress g is the o-ring is rated for gas and other gasses.

the copper fitting and connection method is identical. it's only a different o-ring and a yellow mark on the fitting.

But the heat of the lightning will not damage the sealing element?
