  • Thread protectors on pipe are they usable?

The threaded couplings (thread protectors) on full length pipe are they usable for gas or air? I think I recall they are not do to the threads aren’t pipe threads. Is that right?

No. Do not use them. They are not tapered thread fittings.

I have used them in a pinch, but do not trust them in the least.

            They have straight threads.

Better to use a real coupling or a tee with a plug.

If they are called thread protectors then why dont they have them on both ends

I used one this weekend to make a 3" nipple. I think I'm going to put them with the dies.

They do make good nipple chucks, well sort of.

I never see them anymore on pipe. Only the plastic caps on the pipe ends now.
We call them merchant couplings, and they are an immediate failure on an inspection here.
I keep them, however. They come in handy for the following:
                    1) Lavatory carrier arm extensions. If you are installing a lavatory carrier and have to install it behind the stud track, or behind a block wall, just install 1" nipples and thread protector couplings flush with the rough wall.

                    2) Upright pipe stands. They allow for more adjustment than pipe couplings, and they are free.

they make good spacers in a pinch.
I use the plastic ones for target practice with the air rifle
shooting the s*** is a lot more fun when you use hollow points (much more splatter)

I use the "thread protectors" as bungs when I have to weld one to a tank. They are weldable. The banded couplers are cast and there for should not be welded...

I will be using some "thread protectors" as adapters to pull a jetter hose though a sewer/drain line. I need to make a 1/4", 3/8" and a 1/2" pulling adapters up..

Most of the time it has nothing to do with being or being raised "poor"..
And have everything to do with using what you have or what will work..
There is no place around me local to buy bungs, so "thread protectors" works great...

Cool. Many others have been "poor" and/or raised poor to find a use for everything.
