  • Ridgid 1822-1 pipe thread with auto-jaws not clamping 3/4 and smaller pipe

We own a Ridgid 1822-1 threader. The clamping system seems to be working intermittently. The jaws seem to hang up and not close tightly on pipe 3/4" and smaller. It doesn't clamp tight enough and the pipe slips. It works fine on 1-2" pipe. Is there and adjustment or maintenance that can be performed on the jaws?

Pull the front and rear cover off and make sure all the jaws moving parts are clean also make sure they are lubricated with motor oil. If the jaws are gummed up with gunk then remove the jaws and clean all the moving parts. Don't use detergent motor oil.

Sometimes with more rarely used sizes the gunk that builds up within the jaws keeps things from moving correctly. If the jaws are to worn out you might need to take them in to a machine shop for sharpening.

All threaders need constant cleaning and lubrication. Metal chips, pipe coatings and cutting oil starts to cake up and interfere with smooth operation and the next thing you know the threader is not performing well.
