What's the best thing about Plumbing?

People ask me this question all the time. I have a feeling that your age and how long you have been in the business have a lot to do with your answer but for me, after 36 years the answer has got to be Getting the Check. A close second is Having the check clear.

    What's your answer?

    Good post!

The things I love in no order of importance are:
    Different job sites.
    Meet new people.
    Use of power tools.
The way a good job looks, almost like art to me.
    Take home van.

One thing that sticks out the most is, I just fit in with plumbing guys and really love the work.

I like to tell my guys that for $ 110.00 an hour it does'nt have to work but it damn sure needs to look good. The does'nt work part we can fix later. Course if you take the time to make it look good chances are it's gonna work also. There's nothing worse than those hacks that only want to "get her done" and dont give two craps about how things look. Yes water will flow just fine through a crooked pipe and yes crap flows down hill. It's the attention to detail however that makes the crap happy to flow down hill. Makes me happy too and since I sign the pay checks, I need to be happy.

Many years ago I did an upscale remodel on an Estate in Encino. The home had a full walkout basement and they were adding wine cellar and view room ect to the basement. One day the owner came in (Bridget Handley -Candy Pruitt from Here Comes the Brides). She was so impressed with my copper work in the equipment room she asked what was the best way for the painter to seal the copper so it would not tarnish. I asked her if she was kidding and she told me no it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Those type of jobs/customers makes you appreciate being a plumber.

So many things to write. I love installing a system(water, drainage, doesn't matter) and it will cause the customer to stop and look in awe of how good it looks. Hearing "that's why I called you" when completing a job makes it all worth while. Bringing what's on the prints into reality, having a distraught customer and you know you can help them. I'm missing so much. Pcrack-great thread.

I truly hope this thread keeps going...and going....and going.
Thank you PC for whats probably the BEST thread to date that I've seen on this forum.
There's a whole lotta vindication goin' on.
For all those times that I mighta felt like I was going too far out on a limb to keep a customer happy, the return business has made it worthwhile.
Hearing that I'm not alone is what I originally came here for.

    Bigpipe...yer right...the donuts ain't so bad either.

this is from a diffrent perspective, but my Folks lived in this old farm house before electricity and plumbing, and to quote my mother,

"the best thing about plumbing is not having to use the outhouse on a cold winter day".
