      Sorry to dig up an old thread, found it on a search...

      I was stationed in Germany for 4 years (Spangdahlem). Hell, I even brought back a souvenir. But don't tell my wife I said that; and sometimes I wish I could return it. Anyway, I actually loved the toilets over there (private, not public). I never saw one clog or break. I'm sure it's happened, but those things will suck down a wookie or two... As for the shelf, here's what was explained to me by several Germans (including in-laws). They started using the shelf toilets after the plague epidemic in Europe. Apparently, one of the symptoms can be found in your fecal matter. So, they'd sh!t on the shelf, check it, and proceed from there.

      One thing I didn't like was thier general construction materials. Concrete block everywhere! Also very inefficient heating and insulation systems (probably aids to thier high fuel costs). OHHH, and ZERO air circulation. Mold-a-plenty in that country. Of course there is one way to overcome all that: bier! How I miss the beer...
