  • Hey Duck...

I like your code and licensing system alot better than ours. We could use more plumbers that know how to vent water heaters.

A little background info on this pic:

    1) The homeowners basement flooded due to the heavy rains we had a couple weeks ago.
    2) The gas company shut the gas off at the meter and locked it.
    3) The h/o contracted a local licensed plumbing shop to replace the w/h.
    4) When the city came to inspect the installation this is what they found.
    5) I was contacted today to remedy the situation because the city will not release the meter until the heater is vented properly.
    6) I will make the corrections tomorrow and get the young mothers gas turned back on.

This never ceases to amaze me when I see it. You'ld think common sense even to a DIY would prevent this.

But rick does he really need a di-electrict? The dip tube has plastic in it besides the female adapter at the top is threaded right into galvanized anyway? God that is scary!!! CO2 anyone?

the city should have the other plumber return the $ he got from the job and not be aloud to work in the city again

Oh hell, that whole carbon monoxide thing is way over publicized anyway.

                Re: Hey Duck...

Andy, just in from a loooong day...I hope you aren't using that as a means to speak of plumbers as a whole.
That is outrageous, specifically if the guy knew it going to be inspected...absolutely f-cking insane to backpitch a vent, but to have it backpitched that bad is suicide.

I can completely guarantee you that is the result of a licensed shop that sends out unlicensed/inexperienced kids to work for a fraction of a licensed guys pay.
The very last shop I worked for before going on my own was like this...I spent most of my time driving to jobs to repair & replace complete f-ups for a 28 yr old kid who'd inherited his fathers shop.
I got sick of homeowners and GC's staring over my shoulder p-ed off over the mess the last guy had made...I decided if I were going to put up with this I might as well be self employed.
Some shop owners are unscrupulous when it comes to profit margins, others are too stupid to realize that not all jobs are won by the lowest bid.
I'd wager good money that you have the same dilemma with other HVAC shops in your area.
I still find it odd that the role of plumber vs the role of HVAC is so completely different in your jurisdiction.

                  Re: Hey Duck...

Cant believe somone did a vent that bad must have been a shorty tank there in the first place and someone brought over a tall one.
Plumbers that do work like this should lose thier license or at the least be fined heavily
As for the dielectric unions on some tanks such as Bradford white the nipples are considered to be dielectric but we always put on the unions anyways just good plumbing practice
