  • Insurance Estimates

I feel like I'm in a no win on these things...

I get a call and it ends up being a colapsed line under a slab...
I tell homeowner they need to call homeowners insurance company.

I get the call a day or so later for the estimate... I show up and give the estimate.

That is the last time I hear from them.....

I'm told by a friend who did the carpet in the house that the homeowner did the repair themselves...

I have learned my lesson.... INSURANCE ESTIMATES will no longer be treated like a normal estimate... Insurance estimates are now charged time and trip charge!

Can ya tell I'm a bit mad at myself about this one....

    okie

Yet another reason I don't do free estimates.
I have a service/trip charge just to show up. It weeds out the tire-kickers.

      I feel dirty and used...

Really though, I think I will charge for insurance estimates from here on out but may offer the fee back if I perform the work.

As a g.c. We do a lot of Insurance work. Always charge for them.
Just paid My Son to estimate about $500,000 worth of remodeling. Probably cost Me
$2000. Hope I close at least 1 of the 3. No estimate charge on these ones. Maybe I should re think this !
I can build anything You want , if you draw a picture of it , on the back of a big enough check .

                    Re: Insurance Estimates

                    Not only insurance jobs!!!

With all the foreclosures and vandalized houses that are being sold as-is, we are getting more requests for estimates especially in writing, "for the bank". Some of the people want written estimates and they haven't even made an offer to purchase yet.

As of last Friday the days of no charge estimates are over. We will be chargeing considerably more than a service call but will credit back some of it if we do the work.

It is foolish for the plumber to get roped into this process and not make a dime. The bank wins (they sell the house), the purchaser wins ( he buys a house at a bargain price), the salesman wins(he gets a commision) but the lowly tradesman loses out to some jackleg who low balls a price based on the specs (the estimate) given away for free in the hope that he will be awarded the work.

                    No more!
