That sounds like the brick mason that was not getting paid by the general contractor. While building up the fireplace chimney he would lay a peice of single strength glass in the flue liner about fivr feet down from the top. After the house was sold and the new owners built a fire and the smoke rolled back into the house the GC was called immediately and then the brick mason to come and fix the fireplace that would not draw. The mason explained he would fix asap, meet at the house and bring cash to pay me what you owe me. Mason was paid, climbed on the roof and took broom handle, stuck it down the chimney and broke the glass out.

Kind of like putting a skillet that has no handle on it in a set of flanges.
