Lets talk about business names! I have entertained the thought of changing my business name. I kinda had to start my business quickly several years ago and didn't put much thought into it. It is difficult for me because I see successful plumbing companies named such and such plumbing or somebody's heating and air, but can't come up with anything catchy that incorporates both. The marketing consultants i have spoken with tell me that the type work you do needs to be incorporated into the name!!????? What are some names of companies in your areas that you like or wish you would have thought of? I want something easy to remember and to the point. Anyone use or seen the 1-800-PLUMBING deal? I really like the idea, but still doesn't incorporate heating and cooling! And its kind of expensive.

This might sound stupid, but here lots of small plumbing companies are "Joe's Plumbing & Heating." (The vast majority of them say Plumbing and Heating.) Some of the bigger ones that do AC in the summer too are "Joe's Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling."

I know. I used mechanical services to incorporate all of that and it works well for me, but not customers. And Joes Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling is alot to plaster down the side of a truck.

Honestly, most people have no idea what "Mechanical Services" mean. They assume your an auto mechanic or just do commercial work.

            Re: Business Name

Really, there aren't any catchy names that I can think.

There isn't one that has an advantage over the other through there name.

Word of mouth spreads fast. You should have something more specific in your title in my opinion as you've said.

No homeowner is going look for a "Mechanical" person when they have a leak. So having Plumbing, Heat, A/C in your name might help your customers find you when recommended instead of getting frustrated and calling the next one that says Plumbing, Heat, or A/C in there title.

Its all a catch 22. We have plumbing in our name, and we get calls asking if we rod! Add gas piping in there to...we get calls asking if we gas pipe. Folks dont know plumbers gas pipe.

              Here ya go...

              "Birmingham Plumbing & Heating"

              "Brown Plumbing"

              "Royal Flush"

              "Champion's plumbing"...On a scale from 1 to 10...urinate!

              Sorry

There is a company round here thats done plumbing ( new construction ) for 10 years, and are just now trying to jump into the service game, (no snakes, no thawing equipment, no qualifications, 4 year apprenticeship and bam business owner) not many have heard of them. They are a double looser as far as I am concerned.

"Crooked River Advanced Piping" is plastered in large letters down the side of the van, general public has no idea what piping is. Across the back it reads ...... "C.R.A.P."

Funny as h*^^ to the kids that cannot afford to pay for a plumber, not so much for the older retired little ole' ladies that can afford it.

It's all about the pubic perception.

I went with U&I Plumbing, short an sweet and the customers get a kick out of it, when they ask what it means I just tell them it stands for "you and I Plumbing"

There is a good one out here called "Total Resource Plumbing", again total construction shop with no provisions for service.

                  Re: Business Name

In another thread I was talking about my plan to specialize in sewer and drain work. One of my ideas was to change my name from Reliance Plumbing to something else more "sewer and drain" focused.
But I am afraid that I might confuse my existing clientele. So for now I decided to keep my name and add a subtitle in all my marketing materials. Like this:
                  RELIANCE PLUMBING
                  sewer and drain specialist.
If changing the name completely would really land me more sewer work though, I will gladly do it.
The marketing consultants i have spoken with tell me that the type work you do needs to be incorporated into the name

                  This got me thinking again...

I've been thinking about this for a while. My buddy and I want to start our own plumbing service company. I also have a passion for BBQ-ing and smoking meats, so I've been trying to think of a way to incorporate both passions. We will come to your house, repair any plumbing problems, clean all your drains, and cook you a bbq dinnner! We could pull a bbq pit behind the truck.

We could call it "Two Men, a Snake, and a BBQ Pit"!

Something else to think about, generally speaking, short and easy will go father than long and cumbersome. A 2 word title ending with Plumbing, or Drain Cleaning, Service and Repair, Plumbing and Heating etc. is typically the best bet.

                      "Snake Charmers"
                      Drain Cleaning Specialists

                      "All Phases"
                      Plumbing and Heating

                      I always liked... "Hitt Plumbing"

                      Mine reads...
                      U&I Plumbing
Service & Repair - Drain Cleaning
water heaters - faucets - toilets
                      Backflow testing

It's all about what your trying to market.

                        Re: Business Name

Here we have Roto Rooter, Rooter Man, Turbo Rooter, Magic Rooter, Mr Rooter, Presto Rooter (who seems to have disappeared). The rest are mostly peoples names followed by Plumbing and Heating, etc.

I started with Lenny's Rooter Service, until Lenny's Plumbing threatened to sue me. Oops, rookie mistake. I then using my initials, called it A. L. Hebert Drain Care L.L.C., but people would call me and asked for Al.

I'm in the process of changing it to Hebert Drain Care. Hebert is a well known cajun french name in south Louisiana and pronounced A BEAR which rhymes with care. (A-Bear Drain Care)

I wanted to break away from the generic "Rooter" and make a name for myself.

The type of work I specialize in is featured in the name.

I try to stick to sewer and drain cleaning, video inspection, jetting.

I have my state master plumbing license but do 80-90% drain work.

Noticed when I worked for a company called Blue Flash Sewer Service that people would sing "Roto Rooter" when they would see me on the street with my machine. When I left there to work for Rooter Man I noticed that customers would sometimes write the check to "Roto Rooter" and the banks would cash it not knowing the difference.

So I guess there is something to riding Roto Rooter's coattails, but I'm daring to be different.

                        Lenny

                        Pronounced A-Bear Drain Care

I know, it doesn't make sense.

Think up a catchy name like Dodgie Bros and below, " YOUR SH//T IS OUR BREAD & BUTTER" or "WITHOUT YOUR SH//T WE`D STARVE" something that stands out like dogs balls, but all jokes aside stick with the business name started with and build on that as your reputation is the most important part of any business and the name is a side show.
