Flow meters for sewage

  • Flow meters for sewage

    Has any one had any experience, with measuring the flow of a sanitary sewer.
    The city wants us to install a flow meter in the form of an open flume. Not sure what I'm getting my self into here.

    My only experience with flowmeters was in a previous career as an engineer; we used either turbine style meters or else measured pressure drops across calibrated orifices; highly accurate flow measurements for pressurized flow of clean fluids in closed pipes. Either of these methods would be inappropriate for sewage due to the debris in a sewage stream.

    Sounds like what you are in for is a stinky mess of a sluice.

    What is the application and why?

      Look at http://www.usabluebook.com they have a large amount of sewer industry and plant equipment. I have never done anything with flow measurement but they have the equipment.

        the meter we had was "V" Wier plate in the discharge stream of the plant, and it had a ball float that was connected to a chart that would record the gallons per min for either a 24 or a weeks time, (the unit was not functioning I tried to get it cleaned up, as they before me had choose to set up the weir tank a the location to use for chlorine treatment on the discharge, and the chlorine ate up the recording device. Instead of adding a chlorine treatment tank,) but the powers in charge did not feel having a working meter was in our interest,

        I think you want to look into a "OPEN CHANNEL FLOW METER"



        It looks like to me this would work well, (have no back ground with the unit or company),

        I have not been in the business for many years and all this electronic stuff is new to me, but the plant I worked in used a open "V" weir and measured the water level over the weir, as above but it was done mechanically,

        it looks like to me the key of your sucess is the type of weir or flow channel you use, listed on the page is a number of weirs or flow channels treated would work with most any of them untreated sewage would need more of a flume I would think, vs a weir,

          We also used V wier plates though we did not have a float valve our guys simply noted the level of the flow through the wier on hourly checks.

          I bet Wrenchspinner could get into his Basic CE textbooks and pull out a very easy formula for GPM ... here is one for a V that I found ( I think this one or Bazins formula will work)

            In my area some sewer districts charge commercial customers by amount of usage (per gallon). They base the bill on the water meter reading. Seperate meter for irrigation, of course.
