  • Water service replacement..........in the arctic

we picked-up a job nobody else wanted to do.

so they called in the big boys. that's me on my back and the stunned looking dan.

as you can see, this is a tight crawlspace. there are spots that are so low we have to turn our heads sideways or we'll breath in a bunch of sand.

the units (10) were built in '74 and the original copper supply and return are wearing out due to erosion. it's the fittings that are failing.

we're replacing with insulated 1" HDPE with ford compression fittings in the ground and under the units. we make the transition to the existing domestic water inside.

    more pics to come.

Vince, did you huys use HDPE over PEX due to availability of materials?

I have seen PEX get really brittle in the cold and break is HDPE more cold resistant?

Farmers in my area that still use HDPE for irrigation but it is no longer installed for residential distribution though older areas that have it for yard lines do get repaired.

up here pex is only good inside. i'm not a big fan of it but is the customer wants it, i'd install it.

we us HDPE because that's what the local authority wants. it is tough stuff. the ford fittings, if installed correctly are tough as nails and won't pull apart if the line freezes.

The great things about your pictures is we get a chance to see how things are done in harsh weather.

Vince,if you do snap some more shots....show one looking down the pipe
as I have yet to work with HDPE and ford fittings and want to get an idea of how they attach to a termination fitting.Flare, weld compression etc.

              Is that 6" pipe insulation?
I would think the crawlspace would be heated.....mine would be.

The copper is failing after 30 years---that ain't bad.

the crawl space is unheated, skirted-in.
