  • Winches?

Any of ya'll use winches? Have any brand recommendations?

I need one with about 400' of cable. Only lifting/pulling less than 1000 lbs.

    Thanks for any opinions.

I doubt you will find a 400' winch but are you looking 12V, 120 volt, gas powered or hydraulic? Also it might help to know what you need it for.

I am guessing you going to have a hard time finding a winch that is that light with that size of drum,

I have made a few out of right angle gear boxes, 50 to 1 ratio or 52 to 1, (with hydraulics you can adjust the pressure to stall out the winch so the cable is not over loaded,)

one may consider a Capstan winch and a proper rope,

one thing winches are rated on the drums first layer pull if your wanting that 1000 pound of pull on the out side of the drum you will need more, rating, normally,

I had thought of a capstan as well but needed to know what it was for first.
