any idea what this thing is? A guy at work found it in his grandparents' barn. We don't have a clue.

Looks like some type of clamp.
No markings of any kind I take it huh?
Not even a patent number or date on it?

    TinEye found nothing.
"When we build let us think we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work that our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone upon stone, that a time is to come when these stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, "See! This our fathers did for us."

Nope. no manufacturer, no date, nothing that would identify it at all. The patent was still pending at the time of casting. There are numbers on all the parts, but they are consecutive...... 48, 49... and 51 are the ones we could make out. Those make me think part numbers. The only other symbol we can fiind looks like >-<.

      We're stumped.

          some kind of canning wrench?
No, it's not rocket science, it's plumbing and unlike rocket science it requires a license.

The thing in the full open position looks like it might go around 8 inch pipe. It closes down some when the handle is pulled. The jaw won't open the the full width of the curved part of the wrench.

Co-worker thought it might have been a plumbing tool of some kind, but I'm failing to see a use for it in plumbing right off hand.

Not a clue but if it's a tool Rick probably has a case of them on the shelf somewhere.

Depending on its size, and where it was found, a s.w.a.g. would be that it is used in neutering bulls.

That's what I was thinking. Or a tool to fix a band around an irrigation pipe.

it looks like some type of device to crimp/clamp (the "jaws" appear to mate), but what is semi confusing it only has the one handle, so my guess is it is to be used one handed, the handle when closed appears that is locks by going over center, but I am not seeing any thing to catch the unit and hold it steady so a one hand movement of the lever will work,

I have never seen any thing like it that I am aware of.

what is the physical size of it, and how wide are the jaws?

I guess I missed the part about going around 8" pipe.

                            Elephants maybe?? Or whales??

Some of these farms I been to have some amazing irrigation piping that they have on carts and they use a quick release clamp to join the pipes together. Some of the pipes they use are as big as 12" all the way down to 2" when they get to sprinkler ends. The larger pipes are to get the volume of water to the point.
