  • Leak Detection

I am so sick of plumbers saying and posting that they offer leak detection services. I see all of these plumbers local to me so, I call them posing as a business property owner with a leak under the asphalt with no standing/running water outside while the main is turned off inside and the meter running. Not one company said they did it but would look at it (cost me money) and call in another company. WTF?!

it's the same here. they advertise everything, but own next to nothing. i guess they can call it sub-contracting

i perform lots of specialty task for other contractors and plumbers. i truly own every tool and piece of equipment. if i don't own it and don't do it myself, i don't do it. they need to call someone else as i don't sub out any work.

Rick, do you use a do not compete clause for any of your jobs? The big boys around here use me without any problems but some of the smaller ones (under 25 employees) are scared to use my leak detection services. They use a competitor because that is all he does.

i do a straight swap. typically 1/2 the time they have me bill the customer. then they ask for my phone # and i tell them that i'm here just for this job. the need to call their plumber. sometimes the plumber will ask me to cover for them as they can't make it. but still, i'm only there for that call.

same goes when i can't make it or am out of town. whoever covers for me also bills the customer directly. i'll follow up with the plumber to find out what was wrong.

When ever one of my clients phones about a leaking pipe I go out and see the problem and if I cannot locate it myself I phone a a leak detection company I aways use who specialises in pipe and leak detection and they pin point it within 4" I come back repair it the client is happy I`m not going to waste my money on this special equipment when I don`t use it every day I find clients appreciate you being able to refer them to another tradesman they can trust when you don`t do that type of work its called PR and it works every time

That makes perfect sense. Although, I am finding some resistance with smaller companies trying my services. If there was a way to pacify those contractors enough to try me, I know I could gain their trust. The whole "my word is gold" with some of these contractors is not an option. They see one potential job being pulled out from them and that is it. I guess I can't win them all.

                    Re: Leak Detection

How about a printed form letter stating that:
                    "Your customers are your customers."
                    No company logos.
                    Unmarked vehicle.
A local drain company advertises to plumbers like this.

Speaking of one liners, was telling a story this morning about the first time I installed a man hole. While in line at the public works desk (getting a permit) I chatted up an experienced underground contractor about the difficulties of man holes. His answer has stuck with me.
"They're either awfully simple or simply awful."

I seen a sign on this womans desk, at city hall, where I taking out a permit, a few months back. This was just behind the counter & in full view of whoever walked up there. The sign said:

Would you like to talk to the man in charge, or the woman that knows everything?
