Was finishing up a boiler install today, and was tightening up packing nuts on ball valves and it got me thinking. I never understood the concept of a ball valve having a packing nut. I personally don't like them, and I'm clueless as to what benefit they have versus non-packing nut valves.

If they drip you can tighten them. I have gotten this BK ball valves without packing and it never seemed to leak unless it was a boiler job after getting the air out or in a bear of a place.

I've heard people claim before that ball valves with packing nuts were better, but I just don't see the correlation. I've used the non-packing nut ball valves before, and never had a problem with them either.
