  • The Pentagon's restrooms

The Pentagon, the world's largest office building, has twice as many restrooms as it needs. Why?

I would have thought the federal government would be immune to state laws like that..

        Re: The Pentagon's restrooms

At the time of the Pentagon's construction, in 1941-42, segregation laws in Virginia, where it is located, required separate bathrooms for whites and blacks. Signs identifying them as such were never put up, probably because Pres. Franklin Roosevelt had banned discrimination in the federal government.

would it not be worth the DoD's time and money to reclaim this excess space when renovations to the different wings are being done, and turn it back into productive office space?

                    your right,what was I thinking?

I found some stats on the Pentagon after seeing this thread and it appears there is a washroom for every 88 people. (284 washrooms for about 25000 workers). It also says about 4900 fixtures but does break them down by type, but with that number you probably don't have to go far to find another one if the washroom you first tried is full.

The rest of the stats here : The Pentagon - Facts & Figures: Building Features

Not a professionsl tradesman, thanks for the work you all do for there rest of us and please forgive my uninvited entry into the discussion.
I lost my office in the Pentagon on 9-11-01, and some friends. Thanks to those who built the building and added all those extra walls for those "Latrines". The extra concrete saved a lot of lives.
