  • 1/4 turn stop vs. multi turn angle stop

I had a customer ask me why 1/4 turn angle stops are better than multi turn and I could not give him an honest answer besides that they are easier to turn off. Are there any benefits to 1/4 turn stops? They seem to be a little more solid then the regular brass craft stops but That doesnt mean anything I guess

you can throttle the valve without the washer vibrating/ hammering.

    No packing to leak.

    Positive stop.

    Visual position.

    No stem threads to break.

      Stainless internals vs. plastic.

Put one in each of his hands. Ask him which one he wants in his house.

I believe it's chrome plated brass. Not stainless.

Brasscraft is pretty much the supply house standard.

Just checked Dahl, chrome plated too. Chrome plated still better than plastic and actually better than stainless in chlorinated water. Thanks for the heads up!

I have used 1/4 turn stops that are NOT ball valves. That is, they still have washers and threads. Just as an FYI to all... don't automatically assume that 1/4 turn means ball. Sorry, I can't remember the manufacturer.

Back in the mid 80's, brasscraft came out with a 1/4 turn non ball valve. It was a polymer material that was used to shut off the water and provide the packing.

Told them it was a disaster in the making. But of course they didn't believe me. Now they do.

Rick, you ever see those composite stops where you would grab a round, flat handle and pull straight out? I saw them in a condo complex about 6 years ago and thankfully not since.

Only at the trade shows and samples. Not in the field. I Only work on higer end projects. Not tract jobs.

I personally love those plastic shut off valves with the round handle that you pull out.

Now keep in mind I will never install one, but I have made a lot of money removing them from homes and installing a real angle stop.

I actually did a field test on those ... 10 years later they work fine better than 1/4 turn stops ... Only problem is perception that 1/4 turn is better and also no one knows how to turn them off ... very low failure rate ...

The ones i've seen and used had the flex built onto the stop. If the flex goes bad/gets damaged you have to replace the stop too. But for the price......
No, it's not rocket science, it's plumbing and unlike rocket science it requires a license.

1/4 turn are also better because you won't get little pieces of old black washer breaking off and clogging aerators and fouling ballcocks. Not to mention, once all of the washer does break off it won't completely turn of the water any more.
