  • How You Empty Toilet Traps Before Pulling

Believe it or not I am seeing a decent amount of variation in the steps plumbers use when pulling toilets. One area I have seen some creative solutions in is getting the water out of the trap after you shut the supply off and flush the toilet.

So let hear how you tackle this job. (btw... I am a vac man)

Rubber gloves, a small bucket, a car wash sponge.

I used to use a toilet sucker but it doesn't work well in the freezing weather.

I just use a big ole honking sponge and a bucket although speed is never a factor for me.

I liked using the Toilet Sucker I had but it was just another tool that didn't fit in my tool bag. It eventually broke but it had many other uses not just sucking toilets.

Shop vac is always cumbersome and I usually forget to remove the filter beforehand so it gets moldy a few days later.

The small plastic flexible cup works if you like dipping someone elses body waste and you still need someplace to dump it. Most people don't like crap dumped in their bathtub, myself included, even though I pee in there nearly every day.

My lastest trial is Sodium Polyacrylate. Just leave the water right where it is, in the bowl! So far, I like it. Just a little in the bowl, a little in the tank and 2 minutes later it's a solid.

I use a plunger to push the majority of it down, then slide a mortar pan underneath the toilet.

This is the oatey mix you're using or a homemade recipe? how do you get it out? flush it down?

Just fill the toilet up and flush it away. It does work nice, but I prefer a shop vac.

No, it's not rocket science, it's plumbing and unlike rocket science it requires a license.

Oatey but I fill the bowl to the rim then wait for it to wash down. It's a good test of the new wax seal.

I use the Bucket Head from HD. Its $20 and turns any 5 gal bucket into a vac. Its in the back of the truck 24/7. Gets rained/snowed on and never misses a beat.
