Will it harm the blades to plane wood that has a polyurathane coating on it (son has some maple given to him), or has been painted (Friend has a large quantity of ceder that has been painted)? It seems to me that the polyurathane should be stripped first, and perhaps the paint too, but just don't know. What is your all recommendations?

If you consider dulling the knives as harming them then yes it will harm them unless you first strip the surfaces of the poly and paint.

Thanks BD. It was one of those questions where you know the answer, and just want to confirm it.

I appreciate all of your posts.
