  • My battery replacement experience.......

In the last few months we had started experiencing some tired batteries and I collected a box of them for replacement. I will confess to some trepidation regarding this process due to the posting of less than satisfactory experiences of some people on this forum. I was comforted by the knowledge that with over a thousand Home Depot stores selling Ridgid tools and batteries for many years there would be literally millions of Ridgid batteries qualifying for LSA replacement. I would expect some minor problems from time to time. As a member of this forum for the last three years I have observed that we are a small number in the universe of Ridgid tool users, however it only takes a few people claiming to have problems to make a large impact. I have also observed what I would catagorize as chronic complainers, shills that seem to be spreading misinformation regarding Ridgid performance, and a number of individuals who seem so incompetent that I'm surprised they are allowed out without an escort.
.....Anyway to my experience. I started by doing a search of Ridgid Service Centers in my area of central NYS. I believe the search produced three service centers in a fifty mile radius. I called the first place on the list which was "E.C.K. Tree and Outdoor" ("now there's a name to inspire confidence as a place for professional power tool service", I was thinking as the phone was ringing.) A pleasant sounding lady answered the phone. I asked if they had 24V LI, 18V 1.5Ah LI, and 14.4 NiCad batteries in stock. She told me yes. I asked how long it would take to test a dozen batteries I was bringing. She said it would only be a few minutes. She told me to bring the batteries, the correct charger for each, a tool for each and my LSA info when coming. Due to a variety of reasons I was delayed three weeks in getting to E.C.K. Tree and Outdoor with my tired batts.
Yesterday on 1/15/10 I walked in their door with a bag containing 4-24V LI, 4-18V LI, and 3-14.4V NiCad batts that I thought needed replacing. I was met at the counter by Tim who is the owner. We went through the batteries I wanted tested. I had printed the page for each battery from the LSA list which included all the ID numbers he needed to process my request. He then snatched up the bag of batteries and with a "I'll be back in a few" went to the back. In a few minutes he was back with 4 new 18V LI, and 3 new 14.4V NiCad batts. Tim told me he was out of 24V LI batts and a new batch was scheduled to come in next week. He said that with the recent warm up in central NY a lot of guys had come in with 24's for replacement and had used up his inventory.
We talked about the testing procedure. He told me he had a tester from Ridgid that created a "load" on the batteries to simulate tool usage. If the reading was below a certain point the battery was worn out.
He told me there had been a couple of periods in the last year where there were extensive back order situations for the 24V LI batts and the 18V LI batts. He stated that in a couple of cases Ridgid had bought some 18V tools to get a guy who couldn't get repalcement 24V LI batts, back to work. He felt that situation had been corrected and he has been getting good delivery on all batteries recently. He acknowledged some extensive problems with 18V LI batts recently. I neglected to ask him if he felt the problem had been fixed. I will the next time I talk with him.
There it is. My first visit to a Ridgid Service Center and I would have to give it a positive rating, although I will not annoint them until I get my 24V LI batts. Stay tuned for that info.
For people located in the Syracuse, NY area I would not hesitate to recommend: ECK Tree and Outdoor

I'm hoping that your story is more the norm than an exception and quite frankly I think it is. You're also right on the money with you statement that we here are just a small drop in the bucket of Ridgid customers.

Wouldn't it be nice if this thread could somehow just contain examples of successful service center experiences? It's time that the other side of the fence was heard from. How about anyone wanting to pile on here and turn this into a negative just refrain from posting here and START YOUR OWN THREAD.

As usual, I agree with Ray and the Badger. I receive very responsive and professional service from my local Ridgid service center. Even call backs from the owner to see if everything was handled to my satisfaction. I am kind of a sucker for the 'personal' touch in these days of "Just give me your money and get out of here" attitudes.

Big G......I think it would be a positive thing for all involved to provide the Name, address and phone number of any Service Centers we have had positive experiences with. As is true with most organizations I'm confident that there are some Ridgid Service Centers out there that are providing less acceptable service. Hopefully this thread might be a starting place for listing the service centers that have provided good service. In fact I would ask if anyone, including the forum administrators might know of a way that a new thread could be set up to provide a place for anyone to list the info for "good" service centers.
        Thanks....Ray

roadrashray...what was done to update your dashboard to show that the replacement batteries, which probably have serial numbers different from the original batteries, are now also covered by the LSA?
there's a solution to every problem.....you just have to be willing to find it.

Good call Finer, because yes the numbers are different. I talked with Ridgid customer service the other day and she told me that we can go into our Dashboard and replace the original numbers with the new ones. I had done that on the old Ebox system and had left a memo explaining the change that was available within the tool registration point. I only had experience with defective tool exchanges from Home Depot. The procedure was to simply insert the new serial numbers into the LSA info for the exchanged product. I always included a memo explaining the reason for the change of serial numbers and the date and HD store number.
I haven't tried updating the info in my Dashboard yet and I hope there is a way of inserting the info next to the tool regarding the reason for a change in serial numbers from the original. I plan to insert a memo with the date and name of service center where the batteries were replaced.......Ray

Oops, hold the phone! Unfortunately things are not progressing as promised in battery replacement land! ECK, the Ridgid service center I had used to replace several batteries under the Ridgid LSA has informed me that they got a back order notice for the 24V LI batts they had ordered. They told me this AM that they sent a email to Ridgid yesterday requesting a ship date and will advise me when they get a response from Ridgid. Obviously the back order situation that ECK thought was over is not.
              Stay tuned......Ray

I have been able to find a service center within 50 of San Diego Ca, but they refuse to deal with batteries especially the the 24 volt li. I wonder if someone rebuilds the Li batteries I have 4, only 1 holds a substantial charge. I love the tools when the batteries work. Can anyone help? By the way I bought the tools used but in new condition, so I doubt that any warranty applies. Patrick R

That is very strange about the service center. Are you certain it is a authorised Ridgid service center? Why don't you post the name of it.
You are correct that as a used tool set there would be no warranties which is a bummer as the 24V LI's are very expensive. The last I looked they were available on ebay and if you do a search on this forum there have been some posts about battery rebuilders.
                  good luck......Ray

I received two of them yesterday after several delays including UPS taking 6 days to make a shipment that is normaly done in one. I am going to wait until I receive the other two 24 volt batts before relating the entire story.
                      stay tuned...Ray

                          Re: My battery replacement experience.......

I received my last two 24V batts today from ECK Tree and Outdoor Power Products, the local authorized Ridgid service center by UPS. On 1/15/10 I took 3-14.4s, 4-18s, and 4-24s to ECK for testing. They tested all the batts in about ten minutes and declared all bad except one of the 14.4s. They gave me 2-14.4s and 4-18s on the spot and told me they had an order due from Ridgid in a few days and would send me the 4-24s via UPS.
After several back order situations and a couple of other delays I received two of the
24s in 35 days and the last two in 57 days after drop off.
Tim told me that some of the delays were due to Ridgid back oders and one delay was due to the Ridgid procedure which is cumbersome and he goofed up. As I understand it, he actually purchases the batteries from Gardner and Ridgid reimburses him after they receive all the customer LSA info from him. ECK personnel I worked with were professional and polite and I appreciated their willingness to ship to me via UPS. I was frustrated in several instances when I called for information and they promised to call back and didn't.........Ray

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate overall experience? Please don't give discounts because "he goofed up" and "there was a backorder". Just give us an honest answer, as a typical consumer.
