  • Should the black cap on the pressure washer pump be removed?

I just assembled my RD80701 pressure washer. I removed the little oil plug, added oil, gas, etc. The one question I have is regarding a cap on the pump. Just behind where you connect the high pressure hose to the machine, there is a portion of the pump which sticks up 2" (and is around 1" wide). It has a black vinyl cap covering it. Should the cap be removed, or does it stay on? (I'm not talking about the little oil plug.)

The only thing that sticks up behind where you connect the high pressure hose is the unloader. I've worked on well over a hundred RD80701s and have never seen one with a black vinyl cap covering it. But there's nothing to be harmed if your unloader has such a cap.

Post a pic, let's be sure we're describing the same creature.

Here's a photo with the black cap that was on: http://www.23hq.com/picatavi/photo/5945528

Here's what it looks like with the black cap removed:

Yep. That's the unloader. Never seen one with that black sleeve though.
Off or on, either way, it's not going to make a difference.

Good to know. Thanks a lot for the quick response.
I'm curious. What exactly is an "unloader"?

            Pressure regulator.
It's called an unloader because it takes the load off the engine when it goes into full bypass.

Got it. Makes you wonder why they put that cap on it; obviously something new they're doing. Anyway, thanks again.

might be a way to cover the unloader so nobody will attempt to change the pressure setting. if it's covered, it doesn't appear to be adjustable. chances are they set screw or lock nutted the unloader to a max setting.
