  • Is this worth saving?

I have an old B&D Holgun 1/2" VSR Drill that the switch and power cord both need replacing on. Its been patiently waiting for me to repair it for a number of years Since i have my Milwaukee corded drill I have not needed it so never was pressed into fixing it.

Its old, like late 1970s / early 80s but its in good shape. Today while cleaning out some junk in the shop I came across it and am wondering if it worth the effort to repair. I found a place that sells parts ( http://www.toolpartsdirect.com/cgi-b...1311-09_TYPE_2 ) , but the switch is no longer available. Replacing the cord is easy, I have some SO cord which will do nicely and a new plug.

Since the switch is not available I am thinking of just tossing it and saving the two items which may have future value, the side handle w/clamp to use on another drill and the chuck which is a Jacobs 1/2" keyed type (the chuck w/key at the above parts place is priced at $62.00 ) .

Anyone know how you remove the chuck from a drill motor? Is it some type of taper or press fit or is it threaded? I don't know as I have never had to replace one.

Bob you get a punch that will fit into the key holes and smack it off. make sure you take out the chuck screw. the screw is a left handed threaded screw.you might have to put some heat to it to loosen up.bob hold on for a couple of days and i will see if i have an old switch some where in the shop, just might get lucky.they dont build them like that any more.if they did i would have nothing to fix.

      Thanks for the help John.

      It's a model 1311-09 Type 2

You're right about it being built like a tank. As I remember its got plenty of torque, but only 0-550 RPM.

No hurry to toss it, that's why I asked here if it was worth saving. I'll wait to hear if you dig a switch up.

      Thanks again for the help.

Hey thanks John for the help. Do you need any information off the switch? The wiring is old and the insulation is brittle and has disintegrated, that's why I'm replacing the switch and cord.

As I said I have a nice Milwaukee that works fine, but it would be nice to have the old B&D as a back-up.

              Re: Is this worth saving?

I have the same holgun i use regularly for mixing plaster. Lots of power for heavy work its definetly worth saving. Drills like that nowadays are hard to come by.

                Re: Is this worth saving?

                Bob,

Before trying to remove the chuck please take a look at it and post the model number. It may say 1/2-20 on it and if it does then it's threaded on the spindle. Some of the good older drills did use Jacobs taper mount chucks. If the chuck has one or two numbers and then letters like BA it's most likely threaded. What you don't want to do it try removing a taper mount in the same way you would a threaded chuck.

                Chuck removal and installation: http://www.jacobschuck.com/drill-chuck-install.asp
Info on Jacobs Professional keyed drill chucks: http://www.jacobschuck.com/images/pr...ro%20Keyed.pdf

The older Black & Decker Industrial drills were good products and you won't find a good replacement other than a Milwaukee 0234 or 0244 or one of the German made drills at a high price.

Bob M, You might try on eBay looking for "Vintage Black & Decker Drill" now and then and see what comes back. You don't have to be a member to look at what's for sale. The problem is not really knowing the condition of what's being sold or what kind of person a seller is like. If you do bid be sure to read feedback first. Good luck in your search.
