  • Odd stanley #4 plane, can't determine type

There is a stanley #4 hand plane I am looking at buying but I can't determine its type. I checked the Plane Dating Flowchart and it does not help.

    - it has not patent dates
    - there is a raised ring cast for the receiver knob
    - it is not painted blue
    - only the heel has a raised, broad, flat rib casting and not the toe

If there is someone who really knows the old Stanley hand planes and who could determine what type it is I would really appreciate it ... thanks!

I would say type 18, perhaps 17, no earlier, no later

That looks exactly like the plane my Dad gave me. Decent enough, but the shoe was pretty cupped. I've had to lap it to get it flat again. Took a long time and a lot of passes over the stone, but it's finally in good shape again.
I put it all back together better than before. There\'s lots of leftover parts.

If it has a raised rib on the heel and not the toe, the bed was probably a transitional casting between type 15 and 16. However, these transitions were often put on the shelf, and many old parts were used to make the "war time" #17s. My guess is its a #17.
