  • Extreme Birdhouse # 29

    Hi everyone
Here are a few pics of my latest bird hotel.
This one is made from 70 yr old hemlock barn boards and stands 6 ft tall.
It has 10 decks , 6 dormers and almost 70 apartments.
The railings are made from 1/4" steel rods.

All the towers and decks are removable for cleaning it out.
    The insides are also removable.
I filled 15 garbage bags just from the sawdust and shavings alone.

Thanks gentlemen for the nice comments

This one took about 14 days to build.
I have to build 3 more in the next few weeks but not as big.

              Fantastic John

It seems you've captured early Canadian parliamentary architecture with this one...

The birds should be proud to live in such a place...

                Good eye Jim
This is the picture that gave me the idea for this one.
I took a few ideas from the pic and then added some of my own.

You've done outdid yourself!!! Really nice work, John. Fitting all those pieces and making the things so they can be cleaned is really amazing. Nice to know it's not just an incredible show-piece. Those are indeed lucky birds!
I put it all back together better than before. There\'s lots of leftover parts.

                      Thanks Steve and Sandy.
The insides are pretty easy to build.
They only take 2 or 3 hrs .

The birds really like living in them.

Great job!!!!!Nice to see someone actually takes the time to use their tools. I know a fella that has lots of tools but lives on line impersonating people and pretty much making a general nuisance of himself. Nice to see real craftsmanship on a project that probably toke countless hours to build.

I have a brother like that. lol

Woodworking is pretty easy when you have all the right tools.

This birdhouse took me two weeks to build.
                          Thanks again

                            Two questions for you John:
                            1) How *do* you clean out the apartments? Is the structure hinged or fastened together in the middle as two unit of apartments?

                            2) What species of birds have you noticed co-habitating in such close proximity to one another?

                            TIA,
                            Chiz
                            Later,
                            Chiz

                              Hi ironhat

The 4 towers lift off then i unscrew the birdhouse off of the base .
I then use a farm tractor and a skid to bring it down.
                              They are not that heavy.
                              The base stays on.

Once its down i lay it on the side to pull the insides out .
It doesn't take more then 20 mins to clean it out.

It helps if you have a helper.

I have been getting all kinds of different birds in my yard including purple martins. lots of sparrows, blue jays, canaries, orioles , doves , Robbins , swallows , cardinals ,hawks and seagulls
