part time woodworker should I go with 2 1/2 inch vac or 4 inch not much room in shop money not a problem for best method

I would go with a 4". They have way more capacity for collecting the large volume of chips created when surfacing boards. One other bonus is that they are far quieter

Definately the 4" or larger option. You really will need the additional CFM of air flow that you'll get from a true dust collector versus what a shop vac can provide. Most shop vacs just can't keep up with the volume of chips generated by a jointer or a planer.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the "John" and renamed it the "Jim". I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
