It's not the worst thing ever done. It will wear the blades faster than solid wood, but the blades wear anyway.
What I've never understood is exactly what is intended to be accomplished. There are two effects of edge-jointing, straightness and fine finish.
I can rip a piece on my tablesaw that is as straight as straight can be, so jointing isn't required for that reason. A fine finish isn't typically required (or even particularly possible) since a plywood edge is half end-grain.
