  • What is a dust bag for Wet/Dry

    Hi All,

I am in the market for a new small Wet/Dry Vac. It’s been a while since I purchased a Vac. Mine had a filter cartridge but now I see something abut a dust bag. How does that work, does that work with the cartridge or in place of the cartridge? I hope it’s something that will help with cartridge clogging. I use my vac with the chop saw and orbital sander and I am constantly unclogging the cartridge.

    Thanks Bob

Depending on the brand and model the bag may be like an over filter which covers the cartridge and acts like a pre-filter or in most cases it's a collection bag that catches most of the dirt and dust. The cartridge then is a secondary filter to trap fine dust that makes it through the collection bag. RIDGID needs to really get more serious with bags and filters. ShopVac (brand) has done quite a job making up different bags and filters for their machines but then they aren't into so many different types of products. You might want to take a look at the web site links and it should give you a better idea.

      Thanks for the reply

I have a wd4050 which is still working, my Dewalt DC500 is the one that died. Anyway it look like I can get a bag for the 4050 here. It sure looks like the bag would replace the cartridge filter in this case. If I could read Spanish I could see the instructions in the view.

I have the Craftsman vac model that is similar to your Ridgid vac. I use the Ridgid bags you are looking at with great success. Use it in addition to your filter, not instead of. You need the filter no matter what to keep dust out of the motor.

Your filter's performance will improve greatly with a dust bag and it will not clog, even if you are using the standard filter. The bag will also maximize the debris capacity of the vac, as the debris will no longer just pile up against the filter and clog it.

The small vac fills up fast so I also have a Craftsman 12 gal. also. If your are considering another Ridgid, make sure you choose a model which will accept a dust bag. The Ridgid 12 gal. will not take a bag because the intake (hose connection) is in the motor housing instead of the collection bin.

You still need to use the cartridge filter. The bags are the main collector but some fine dust can pass through. The cartridge acts like a secondary filter. I recommend looking at one of the premium filters. For coarse dirt, metal chips or for wet pickup the bag should be removed.

It's a bit crazy but you can find far more accessories for Ridgid vacs at Sears and especially their web site www.craftsman.com than you ever will at Home Depot. The Craftsman vacs are either Emerson-Ridgid or ShopVac. Just look for the Craftsman one that's close to the one you have and check the accessories list. You might take your vac along and leave it in the trunk. That way you can look at the ones in Sears and if necessary go back and have a look at your's and then head back to the tool department.

Please see this and look at the left picture at the bottom. It should give you a better idea about the bags.

Thanks, I just picked up two bags at HD.

I wish I knew about these earlier, would have saved me a lot of time cleanning the filter. I took a look at some high end vac's on line, I noticed some of them come with a self filter cleaning system, either shaking the filter or running a brush through it. Pretty cool, but if these bags do the trick I don't see the need for a $300 Vac.

You can take the RIDGID filters outside and blow them from the inside out to get lots of dirt out fast. Then when you have time rinse it out under running water and again from the inside out. Once clean let it sit in a warm area overnight to dry. Personally I like ShopVac filters better but you might look at the CleanStream super filter cartridge for the RIDGID. It's very good for super fine dust and washes out better than the economy filters do. Be sure to check measurements.
