Similar. I made a taller MDF fence and glued and screwed a board to it to attach to the slides in the top of the fence using bolts and wingnuts. This allowed me the capability to shim the jointer fence portion, if needed, to be at a right angle to the table surface and also keep metal parts out of the path of the board (and blade teeth).

You are correct in that I could joint a 3 inch board, but I probably won't have many occasions for that.

FYI, In the background is a router sled prototype under construction.

Hi, I'm Chiz and I have a Shopsmith (group response, "Hi, Chiz"). I've had
my Mark V, model 500 for 32 years and I guess that the only reason I still have it is sentimentality. It was my only machine up until three years ago. I never could afford the aditional machine add-ons so my projects were limited to home remdeling. OK, more to the point, if I were you I would go wth single purpose machines. You will always give up something when machines are dual purpose. I'm also in favor of putting your money into a good 6" jointer and a tickness planer and a bench mounted drill press (if your projects will allow for this minimal limitation) and a spindle/ disc sanding station (oops! I just violated my single purpose rule - so shoot me ). Take your time and enjoy the planning phase. You have a lot of great suggestions and a shop building to die for!

        Later,
        Chiz
