I have a very old drill press which only has one speed it also has a very large footprint. I am considering replacing it with a new one but don;t know mush about drill presses. Why would I want variable speed? For heavy amature woodworking use, is a table top model acceptable? Any other things I should consider? Any thoughts on brands?

There is an article in American Woodworker magazine's April issue testing and comparing floor model drill presses. You might want to check it out as there is some good info it in. According to the article a ton of speeds is a bit of overkill but I always like tools with more flexability. As far as floor v.s. benchtop, its a personal decision but the first time you need the extra size and don't have it you'll wished you had gotten the bigger unit...just food for thought.
