  • Vintage Wooden Tool Chest

I am enamored with the old wood tool chests. The other day I saw one at a friends house that was his deceased fathers. What a great keepsake! Most of my woodworking has been around a project I am just completing, a roll top desk. It is made of oak. My question from you experienced folks, what kind of wood would you use for this tool chest. The pictures usually show natural oak, but would another wood turn out stunning? Please advise.

Here is the company to look up when you want quality wood chests for storing tools and much more.

Oak, cherry, maple, more ... Use what you like and maybe use more than just one wood.

I think cypress would be a really interesting wood for a tool chest, but finding it is difficult and it's right pricey when you do. Cypress is a good naturally bug-resistant wood, which appeals to me for woodworking tools. I'm not real familiar with it as far as grain goes, so it might not be very showy.

Hardwoods are what you want. Other than that requirement, anything goes. I agree with you, they're beautiful pieces and I'd love to build one too. I've seen plans for toolboxes in woodworking magazines. Hopefully I have them saved somewhere...I'll look later today.
I put it all back together better than before. There\'s lots of leftover parts.

Thank you so much for this website. It is absolutely marvelous. Is there anything as far as copyright that would be violated to use one of these as a pattern and building it myself? Can hardware be purchased so if built by me it could look authentic?

Woodcraft has plans and hardware. Here's a link to one of their plans

Or you can do your own and just get the hardware from them, here http://www.woodcraft.com/depts.aspx?...50&topnav=true

I'm sure there's tons of places to get hardware from, Woodcraft is just one source.
