  • New lead law may put you out of business,

    I suggest you call your congress people and raise some noise on his issue,

    YOU as homecrafter, or small business may be out of business soon, If you make and sell any children's toys or furniture, as this new testing law appears to apply to you.

    NOTE the THIRD PARTY TESTING.

    If you are "caught" racketeering in illegal children's products, you can be fined upwards of $100,000 and receive possible jail time. Craft fairs are going to tank. Grandpa can no longer make toys in his workshop. Grandma had better not sew any dolls' clothes. Yeah, great idea – let's turn our seniors into criminals.

    Ban on Lead in Toys and Children's Products
    Mandates a phased-in ban on lead in all children's products, requiring that lead levels be reduced to 600 parts per million by February 10, 2009; 300 parts per million by August 14, 2009; and 100 parts per million by August 14, 2011. Electronic devices and inaccessible component parts will be subject to rules to be issued by August 14, 2009.
    Reduces permissible lead paint content from 0.06 percent to 0.009 percent (effective August 14, 2009) and possibly lower after further studies are conducted. Also mandates changes in how lead content in paint is tested and calculated.
    Mandatory Testing and Certification

    Restates and expands requirements for self-certification and testing for all products that are subject to any rule, ban, standard or regulation that is enforced by the CPSC. Effective November 12, 2008.

    Requires third party testing and certification of all children's products for compliance with safety standards, with detailed requirements for laboratory accreditation, firewalling rules for labs owned or controlled by the manufacturer and priorities for testing certain products. The testing and certification provisions take effect 90 days after the CPSC has published its requirements for accreditation of third party testing bodies.

    The CPSC must publish these requirements by September 13, 2008, for lead paint; October 13, 2008, for cribs and pacifiers; November 12, 2008, for small parts; December 12, 2008, for metal jewelry; March 13, 2009, for baby bouncers, walkers and jumpers; and June 14, 2009, for all other children's products.

      I'm thinking the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores will be the first to go. Every toy in there is plastic and from China. Then, they will start pounding on the flea market type guys that sell these types of trinkets.
      A friend of mine took out the "gumball" toy dispensers in his restaurant when the lead in toy warnings started last Fall. He made about $200 a month on three of these things, a tattoo machine, and 2 plastic toy machines. Ssomeone would come by and stock it, they actually owned them, so it was free money for him.

        Looks like the CPSC is listening and our wooden toys & such will be exempt from testing.

            If you making them for kids toys then you have to have them tested, I guess, and use some thing other than lead projectials,

            ever two year old need his own black power rifle,

            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            I have no problem with having imported toys tested or there furniture,
            but this knee jerk reaction by congress to test ever thing domestic or imported, one big law to cover everything taking away so many times from the small home business, this process has been done many times in the past, now making most home business many times nearly impossible.
            Charles Seehuetter Panama thank you for posting the other links I had not see those yet,
                  Oh, relax. No one is trying to close down your workshop or prohibit you from building toys for your grandkids. What irresponsible nitwit would use lead paint on a kid's toy, anyways?
