  • French Cleat---What Angle?

I was just informed that my next project would be a new mantle, I’m still in the design stage and thought I would mount it utilizing a French Cleat. I seem to recall reading that the proper angle is 30°, if this is so, would it be 30° from vertical or 30° from horizontal? I would think the more vertical junction would provide superior holding potential at the cost of being a more fragile connection and vise versa for the more horizontal junction. Or do I just split the difference and cut it at 45°?

    Thanks for your input

Hi: I use 45 as well. Here's a drawing of a french cleat you may be interested in.
