  • Identify this wood

I'm hoping to update my kitchen cabinets and need to find out what type of wood I'm dealing with so I know what I can do to it. Can anyone give me an idea of what this may be? The cabinets seem to be original to the house, built in the late 60's.

    Thanks,

    Nick

Yeah, looks Maple-esque to me, as well... but I'm no expert.

A larger photo might be beneficial.

I think you're correct. They have that "wave-like" thing going on, perpendicular to the grain.

And it is a fairly common cabinet wood; 'least I've seen lots of cabinets built out of birch.

I believe Maple can exhibit similar wave-like patterns, though. Although I do think it looks more Birch-like then Maple (they're fairly similar).

Looks like Birch to me, more than maple due to the dark veins running through the wood. The veining is more prominent in Birch than maple IMO.

If I were a bettin' kinda gal, I'd say Birch. It's really difficult to tell from the picture.

Matching stained and finished wood is always difficult. Likely it's birch with a light honey oak stain on it, then a clear coat of poly sprayed on.
I put it all back together better than before. There\'s lots of leftover parts.

I'm of the same opinion as Nail banger thinking its birch due to the darker veining.

It's definitely red birch. At least that's what the green stamp on the bottom of of one of the cabinets says. I can't believe I didn't think to look there before.

Thanks for all your feedback. Now I just have to decide whether to leave them as is or paint them.

                              Thanks again.
