  • Need help designing a fireplace mantel

    Hi,

I have a fireplace that really needs sprucing up. The walls on each side are recessed, so I plan on building shelving units later. The fireplace is surrounded by single row ceramic tile, which continues into the hearth.

My problem is this: there is bare wall space on either side of the tile and it's not symmetrical. One side has 4 1/2" and the other side has 6" of wall space. So, I'm stuck as to how to finish the legs for the mantel.

My choices are to either simply build a floating shelf above the tile to serve as the mantel, or to build it with legs that are unequal.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Pat
